What Are The Bravest Dogs? Top 7 Courageous Breeds, According To Experts

Bravery in a human is one thing, but bravery in our canine friends is a whole other. There are fewer things more heartwarming than watching your pup come to your defense in an act of courage and love. Their selflessness and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way to protect their loved ones is a testament to the incredible bond we share with our furry companions. Of course, some dogs already have the courageous instinct built into the fabric of their breed. Some of the bravest dog breeds in the world, like German Shepherds and Rottweilers, are especially known for their courage and protective nature. These dogs are often chosen for roles in law enforcement and search and rescue missions due to their innate courage and ability to stay focused in high-pressure situations. However, it is important to note that bravery can be found in all breeds and sizes of dogs.

Of course, being a new dog owner can be an adventurous time, whether you want it to be or not! A new survey finds just what to expect when welcoming a new dog into the home. The survey reveals that within their first year at home, respondents’ dogs went through 27 toys, destroyed four pieces of furniture, and slipped out of their leash six times. However, it isn’t all rough times; from helping their owners through an average of three new jobs and three new homes, 64 percent of respondents don’t know where they’d be without their dog’s love and support. So, while bringing a puppy into the home can be daunting at first, one must remember the payoff of a best friend at the other end of those terrible twos.

The bond that comes with owning a dog is undeniably special. They’d do anything for us, and vice versa. In fact, many would rather spend money on their dog than their partner. And, most people would rather snuggle with their dog as well. I guess that’s why they call it puppy love.

The List: Most Brave Dog Breeds, According to Experts

1. Rottweiler

Who better to run to your protection than the otherwise gentle giant, the Rottweiler. Coming in at number one on our list, “The Rottweiler is not just a protective, powerful-looking pooch, but is also a smart and loyal one too. They were bred to protect their herd, but they have since been found to protect their human herd just as well. Team that with their lovable friendliness toward the family, and you got the number one protector,” says Wag!

“With a robust and muscular build, the Rottweiler is another brave breed that serves as an excellent protector. They are fiercely devoted to their families, and their natural fearlessness makes them formidable guard dogs. Despite their strong appearance, Rottweilers are known for their gentle and loving nature towards their owners, making them a balanced blend of courage and affection,” writes Chocolate Mansion Sioux City.

“With an imposing physique and a booming bark, Rottweilers exude an air of strength. They are also extremely loving to their families. Their fearlessness puts them at the top of the list of courageous dogs. They are incredibly strong, which can be a great factor when looking for the most courageous dog breeds. This does, however, come with a great deal of responsibility in training,” adds DogTime.

2. German Shepherd

The number two spot on our list is coveted by the German Shepherd! A large-sized working dog who is highly intelligent, agile, and versatile, “One of the top police and military choices in the United States, the German Shepherd is also a brave guardian for the family. They also bond well with other family members, even cats, and will protect them too. With intelligence and loyalty to boot, these are perfect dogs for any family,” reports Wag!

“German Shepherds originated from Germany dating back to the late 1800s. These highly active dogs have a willingness to learn and serve a purpose. As a working dog breed, German Shepherds are naturally loyal and bond well with familiar faces. They have a tendency to become overprotective of their family and territory; strong guidance and training is a necessity,” states Savory Prime Pet Treats.

“We can’t talk about the bravest dog breeds without mentioning the German Shepherd. After all, it’s the first breed that comes to mind when we think about police dogs! What’s great about them: Loyal to the nth degree, confident, easy to train, and eager to please. They’re happiest when they’re working, so give them a job that lets them show off their bravery (in a safe way, of course, unless you’re training a police dog),” notes Dogvills.

3. Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman Pinscher is another great breed when looking for your ultimate protector. Coming in at number three, “Known for their protective instincts, they are one of the smartest dog breeds in the world with courage that is unbeatable. The Dobie is also a speedy breed, so they can and will chase the intruders away no matter how fast they are,” comments Wag!

“Another breed that has a rep for being dangerous and menacing, the Dobie is actually a lot friendlier than he looks! The AKC calls him one of ‘dogkind’s noblemen,’ and it’s easy to see why. From his powerful stance to his bright, intelligent eyes, he’s definitely a king of kings,” adds Dogvills.

“Doberman Pinschers are renowned for their loyalty, intelligence, and fearlessness. These dogs are highly trainable and excel in various working roles, including personal protection. Dobermans fearlessly step up to protect their families and properties, displaying incredible bravery and determination. Their imposing presence and natural instincts make them a force to be reckoned with,” describes Savoring the Grandstand.

4. Belgian Malinois

The number four spot on our ranking goes to the Belgian Malinois. These dogs are known for their exceptional scent detection abilities, making them ideal for tasks such as search and rescue operations. “Police and military often use this breed for its trainability, intelligence, high energy level, and overall work ethic. “Did you know that many of the military dogs we think are German Shepherds are actually Belgian Malinois? They are highly intelligent and trainable, very people-oriented (so not a good breed to leave alone all day), and form very strong bonds with their family. Early socialization and training will help you deal with that tendency to chase cars, cats & kids. They are quick to learn and eager to please, so as long as you’re diligent early on, it shouldn’t be a lifelong issue,” explains Dogvills.

“Belgian Malinois are agile, intelligent, and renowned for their bravery. Often used in police and military work, these dogs fearlessly face dangerous situations without hesitation. They have a strong work ethic, unwavering focus, and an incredible drive to protect and serve. Belgian Malinois are loyal and devoted companions, always ready to put themselves in harm’s way for their handlers,” adds Savoring the Grandstand.

5. Presa Canario

The Presa Canario takes the coveted number five on today’s ranking. Originating in the Canary Islands, “Affectionate and docile when relaxing with its owner, the Presa Canario becomes a completely different animal when threatened. “Presa Canarios are recognized by their wide jaw and powerful, square head. Although first appearances may look daunting, they are very docile with their family. This courageous dog breed is distrustful of strangers but should accept strangers if their owner accepts them. The breed commands attention and would likely be a deterrent for any intruder. Still, their loving nature makes them a great addition to your home. Like many other strong-willed dog breeds, the Presa Canario requires a great deal of training. Early socialization is a must,” states DogTime.

“The Perro de Presa Canario has a strong and muscular build, with a height that ranges between 21 to 29 inches and weighs between 80 and 150 pounds. These tasks require a powerful, agile, courageous dog with a large head and powerful jaws. The Presa is extremely affectionate, docile, and well-behaved with its owner and family but is wary of strangers and aggressive with other dogs,” reports Dogmal.

6. Boxer

The Boxer breed is the next breed we will be talking about. A medium to large-sized dog known for its muscular build and winning personality, “Boxers are energetic, playful, and fearless dogs. Despite their fun-loving nature, they possess a remarkable amount of courage. Boxers are known for their fearlessness in the face of danger and their protective instincts. They form strong bonds with their families and will fearlessly defend them if necessary,” withstands Best For Pets.

Boxers are energetic, fun-loving, extremely loyal, and low maintenance. They are harmless around family members but can be wary of strangers. This makes them good watchdogs, as they often will alert their owners when there is a stranger near their home,” notes Savory Prime Pet Treats.

“Boxers are known for their boundless energy and spirited nature. Their playful demeanor masks their unwavering courage as they fearlessly confront any challenges that come their way. Boxers possess a strong sense of loyalty and will bravely protect their families if the need arises. Their muscular build and alertness make them formidable guardians,” adds Savoring the Grandstand.
